Akanu Ibiam Airport: Utazi urges Buhari to fix Otukpo-9th Mile road
Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Enugu North) on Monday asked President Muhammad Buhari to fix the Otukpo-9th Mile roads to ease movement of commuters as commuters travelling from the nation’s capital, Abuja, to the south-eastern states of Enugu, Ebonyi and environs shall be plying roads as alternative to flights.
Recall that President Buhari had approved the sum of N10bn for the rehabilitation of Akanu Ibiam international airport, Enugu, which has been in a sorry state.
The rehabilitation, which is expected to commence soon, will force commuters, mostly political office holders and high profile individuals, to ply roads.
Coming under order 43 of the Senate rules on Tuesday, Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Enugu North), said it was incumbent on the President to order immediate repairs on the Lokoja-Otukpa-9th Mile road, which has become the major route for commuters travelling to East.
“Mr. President, you could remember, when the Abuja international airport was undergoing rehabilitation and we had to make use of the Kaduna airport as alternative, the federal government carried out great repairs on Abuja-Kaduna road, which commuters plied to catch up with their flights.
“The Lokoja road through Otukpa which is the major route for everybody travelling to the East is in the state of disrepair, especially in Otukpa, Benue State. It took me 45 minutes to pass through Otukpa at the weekend.
“We appreciate President Buhari for approving the rehabilitation of Enugu international airport. But we need his intervention in the roads too, to ease movements of commuters”, Utazi said.
The lawmaker was optimistic that, if the roads were given attention, it would encourage commuters, especially, those who were used to flight, to ply the roads, for the period of rehabilitating the airport.
