The Enugu State Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Mrs Adaonah Kene-Uyanwune, has urged civil servants to emulate retired accountant-general of the state, Dr Paschal Okolie, exemplary qualities of dedication and forthrightness.
Kene-Uyanwune said this in a send-forth in honour of Okolie held at the state Ministry of Finance and Economic Development on Thursday in Enugu.
She also extolled the sterling professional qualities of Okolie in prudently keeping the financial records of the state up-to-date.
The commissioner, who said that she had worked closely with Okolie for some years, described him as a professional who discharges his duties with honesty and transparency.
“During my work with him, I discovered a forthright and honest person, who also maintains the high public trust and transparency expected of a man of his professional calling and capacity.
“Within his tenure in office, the state financial records are up-to-date and the state has been well represented in all national financial affairs and meetings,’’ she said.
Speaking, the Commissioner for Women and Gender Affairs, Princess Peace Nnaji, urged serving civil servants in the state to emulate Okolie’s meritorious and committed service to the state.
“I have seen a civil servant with a difference and one with unique commitment to serve our state and humanity.
“With his unique qualities; I see him being elevated higher and higher even after his retirement,’’ Nnaji said.
Chief Ikeji Asogwa, Executive Chairman, Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), lauded Okolie for his 35 years of dedicated service to the state.
“We are proud of you and what you have achieved within this decades-long service to our great state.
“It is a thing of joy and we are proud to have one of the best financial experts, who have gathered international exposure in the course of his work,’’ he said.
In a goodwill message, Accountants-General from Anambra, Ebonyi and Imo States, applauded Okolie’s exemplary professional qualities.
They commended Okolie, who was Chairman of Forum of Accountants-General in Nigeria before his retirement, for upholding the standard of the association and repositioning it for greater impact in the country.
Responding, Okolie thanked Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for giving him the opportunity to serve the state at the highest financial office as well as to make his professional impact to be felt in the state.
“I am sincerely grateful for the love and support the state and her people have shown me especially for the good working relationship in the state’s Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
“I am indeed eternally grateful to Gov. Ugwuanyi for the opportunity to serve and his support to my office while I was still in service,’’ he said.
The event was attended by traditional rulers, professional colleagues, staff of the ministry as well as well wishers and relatives of Okolie.
It would be recalled that on Monday, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi appointed Okoli his special adviser on Financial Matters
Okolie, who is a financial expert of high repute, earlier last week, handed over to the new acting Accountant-General of the state, Mr Remigius Odoh.
