Enugu State Head of Service Chidi Ezema has charged external auditors in the state to be effective in carrying out their duties in accordance with the state government policy.
Ezema stated this at a one-day forum organised by the office of the state auditor- general for external auditors on Wednesday.
The interactive meeting held at the instant of auditor general of the state was necessitated by the need to address some loopholes and laxity discovered among external auditors in discharge of their duties and need for them to live up to expectation.
Head of Service, Chidi Ezema considered the meeting critical as it will among other things remind them of the government policies on firms, need for compliance and to be more articulate in discharge of their duties so as to add value to government establishment.
Also speaking, the state Auditor-General Livinus Okoro harped on the importance of the audit firms in the state to review their licenses stating that the forum is aimed at preferring solutions to some bottlenecks militating against the efficiency of their profession such as agreeing on procedures and manner external audit of government establishments are carried out and various measures to improve the audit.
Okoro who reminded them on the need to adhere strictly to the state government’s policy on auditing also urged them to always renew their license annually for increased internally generated revenue.
Some challenges addressed during the meeting were, rotation of job, monopoly of auditing firms, political patronage, appointment of auditors in the state on professionalism , formulation of back up law that the state government charges 10 % for any job given to them.
It is expected that the external auditors would perform better in the discharge of their duties if the above challenges are corrected and followed up duly.
