The Nigerian Union of Journalists, the Nigeria Labour Congress and a Coalition of Civil Society Groups have commenced a good governance tour to local government areas of Enugu State.
The tour began with a visit to Enugu east Local Government Area led by the Chairman, NUJ, Enugu State Council, Rex Arum and Representative of Civil Society Organisations, Onyebuchi Igboke.
The first port of call was Nkwo –Nike, Headquarters of Enugu East Local Government Area where the Chairman of the Council area Alex Ugwu who led the delegation on inspection of some projects executed by his administration said he has achieved much in the areas of infrastructural development, human capital development, education and health.
Ugwu said his administration has given priority to the welfare of workers in council adding that on assumption of office accumulated leave allowances of workers were paid.
He said all revenue accrued to the council from the Federal account and internally generated revenue was judiciously used in extending democracy dividends to the people.
Speaking separately, Chairman of the NUJ, Rex Arum and representative of the Civil Society Organisations, Onyebuchi Igboke said the visit was not a witch-hunt but an effort by the three associations to partner local government areas to ensure good governance at the local government level.
They commended the Alex Ugwu-led administration for completing projects inherited from previous administrations.
They stressed the need for the council invest in agriculture so as to create jobs for the teeming youths and reduced unemployment, crime and other social vices.
The tripartite tour by the NUJ, NLC and CSOs is aimed at ascertaining the level of achievements of current chairman in the council areas.
