Enugu State Commissioner for Local Government Matters, Peter Okonkwo, has commended Council Chairmen of Oji-River, Udi, Ezeagu, Agwu, Aninri, Nkanu West Local Government Areas for their giant strides in project execution.
He gave the commendation during a familiarization tour of the areas.
According to him, various projects by the respective chairmen showed that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s dream of massive rural development in the state was being realized.
“Rural development is a hallmark of Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration. I am impressed with the level of infrastructural development executed and ongoing in the third tier of the state. I urge the council chairman to sustain the tempo.”
In Oji-River, Commissioner Okonkwo was shown round some of the achievements of the council by the chairman, Harrison Okeke. The projects were a borehole, legislative building, clearing of waterways in the market, fencing of the secretariat, drained water tapped, urban market, reroofing of the police station in Oji and facelift on the administrative building as well as creation of a park at Ugwuoba.
He also asphalted with gutters some rural roads.
In Udi Local Government, the Chairman, Nestor Ochin, outlined some of his achievements to include renovation of the council’s administration block, providing, logistics to neighbourhood watch groups and construction of a pavilions, renovation of Development Centre at Awhum, renovation of primary school and Health Centre at Akpakwume/Nze and grading of 2.8 kilometer road at Ukana.
Ezeagu Council chairman Fred Ezinwa, during the inspection, showed some of his achievements to include building an office for the local government neighbourhood watch, refurbished the secretariat, procured motor cycles and vans to improve the security in the area, built conflict and mediation centre and an office for traditional rulers’ block, and pavilion as well as an ICT Centre.
In Nkanu East Council Chairman, Hon. Godwin Ikechukwu Ubagu took the Commissioner where he built the Administrative block, ultra-modern pavilion housing 16 offices at the black.
He also did well in the area of agriculture by encouraging farmers especially the Enugu State Graduate Farmers Association into the Local Government Council, he also embarked on various primary Healthcare Programmes such as Immunization.
In conjunction with Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) he provided School desks and other learning materials to public Primary and Secondary Schools in the Council Area, he provides other logistics for security, paid salaries and other allowances.
In Nkanu West, Council chairman, Henry Okeke informed the Commissioner that the council had sank a borehole in the secretariat, renovated some houses, graded rural roads, built an ICT Centre, renovated the council pavilion, provision of security to traditional rulers and equipping neighbourhood watch groups in the area.
