Rangers FC defeated Elkanemi warriors 2-1 inside Sani Abacha stadium, Kano.
It was an inspiring performance from the coach Olugbenga Ogunbote tutored Rangers International F.C as the five time F.A/ Aiteo Federation cup champions defeated El-Kanemi Warriors with the former gaffers of the ‘Flying Antelopes’, Imama Amapakabo, 2-1 inside Sani Abacha stadium, Kano, on a wet Monday afternoon.
The Enugu boys were quick off the block as the trio of Bright Silas, Ifeanyi George and Ugochukwu Ugwuoke found ways past the back line of the Maiduguri side but were wasteful with the chances created.
On ten minutes of play, Ifeanyi George steeled his nerves to convert a penalty kick awarded his side after Bright Silas was upended in the box as he was about to pull the trigger following a fine run down the line by Ugwuoke to deliver an inch perfect cross.
Bright was presented two more chances on 25 and 27 minutes but he inexplicably missed when it would have been easier to score with an open net at his mercy.
When both sides returned for the second half, Rangers were more adventurous but it was substitute, Afolabi Abdulrahman who drew the Maiduguri side level on 55 minutes after some slack defending by the Coal city side.
However, substitute, Kelvin Itoya had other ideas as he connected effectively with his diving header an inch perfect cross from Chidera Ezeh with ten minutes left on the clock for the winning goal.
Reacting after the encounter, coach Ogunbote said, “We should be glad getting the result especially against El-Kanemi. There are so many scenarios surrounding the game”.
“They are not a pushover team. It was not an easy game but we thank God for the victory. It was quite challenging playing against a former coach of Rangers but we just played our game and got the result we wanted and we shall continue to work on noticed lapses in other matches.”
Match winner, Kelvin Itoya said, “I feel elated scoring the winning goal but it was a team effort and we are well motivated to go all out and get the needed result. We have no excuse than to get the three points and that is what we got.”
” It can only be the work of God. I came in and scored against them in a league match in Enugu and today, I came in and got the winning goal, To God be all the glory.”
In the earlier match between Supreme Court and Sunshine Stars, it ended goalless.
Rangers next play Supreme Court at the Kano Pillars stadium, Sabon-Gari, Kano on Wednesday, September 26, 2018.
