The All Progressive Congress on Saturday held the party’s local government congress in the 17 local government areas of the state.
The members were unanimous in the choice of candidates who will deliver the party in forthcoming elections in the state.
At Udi Comprehensive High School, where the Udi Congress was held, the party elected Hillary Nwabisi as the new Chairman of the party, while Mr. Confidence Chiedozie emerged unopposed as Secretary.
Mr. Nwabisi polled 390 votes to beat his rival, Mr. Ben Uzochukwu who scored 24 votes.
Also at Enugu South Local government area congress election which took place at Final Point Hotel, Mr. Mike Ogbonna defeated Uchenna Edeh with 169 votes against 10 votes
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Geoffrey Onyeama who witnessed the congress commended the maturity demonstrated by the party members and urged them to continue to support the party as it works towards taking over the leadership of the state.
He called for unity of purpose among APC faithful in the state in order to achieve their ultimate target.
He described the election as peaceful which he said followed all known procedures established by the party.
Onyeama said he was satisfied with the congress and commended the Enugu State Ward Congress Committee for ensuring fairness.
The Chairman of the APC local government congress committee, Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu who monitored the elections at Udi and Enugu South Local Government Areas said the process followed laid down party’s guidelines and praised the party members for coming out en masse to elect their preferred candidates.
Dr. Ijeomah said Enugu State is dear to the APC and it is ready take over Lion Building come 2023.
He said, “Over the years, the APC in the state has shown the potentials to perform but the kinetics were lacking.
“However, the zeal and spirit displayed here today is outstanding and we are satisfied. We certify what we have seen here today and with your commitments, APC will be entrenched in the state,” Arodiogbu said.
On allegation that his committee was favouring a certain faction of the party, the APC congress Chairman said it was not true adding that there was no report of parallel congress available to him and described the allegation as only on the realm imagination.
On his part, former Senate President and leader of the party in the South East, Senator Ken Nnamani commended the peaceful and orderly manner the congress was conducted and described the elected party executives as men of integrity and credibility that have all it takes to deliver the party.
Delighted with the crowd and enthusiasm by party members, Nnamani attributed the democratic attitude to vision of the Governor Mai Mala Buni- led leadership to entrench true democracy in the party.
Sen. Nnamani described the Foreign Affairs Ministry as a chip of the old block and a complete gentleman who is committed to ensuring that the APC is rooted in the state.
While congratulating the new Chairman of the APC in Enugu South, Sen. Ken Nnamani charged him not to be distracted by mischief makers who are bent on distabilising the party.
