UNICEF advocates maximum protection of children

United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has expressed commitment to ensuring protection of children across the globe as well as promotes a hygienic environment aimed at enhancing their healthy life.

It stated this at a two day annual review meeting of the agency’s reports, held in Enugu, to access the performance of the various thematic areas.

UNICEF was created with the purpose of nurturing and caring for children and to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path.

Nigeria was one of the very first African countries where the United Nations Children’s Fund established a programme of cooperation.

While expressing the state government’s readiness to partner other agencies in ensuring children’s’ wellbeing, the director of planning, Enugu state planning commission, James Ugwuoke, noted that the passage of Child’s Right Act into law in the state was a step taken in the right direction, to protect the right and interest of the children.

Desk Officer, Enugu UNICEf economic planning commission, Amanda Okafor, maintained that the agency has achieved a lot in reducing the rate of out-of-school children, stating that basic education is paramount in every child’s life.

Also, a Procurement Officer, Benue state agency for the control of AIDS, BENSACA, Regina Ameh who said with the assistance of UNICEF, the agency has recorded tremendous achievements in curtailing the spread of the virus and stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS in the state, advised carriers of the disease not to keep mute to avoid worsening the situation.

The Programme Manager, Water Sanitation and hygiene, WASH, in the rural water supply and sanitation agency, RUWASA, Awka, Anambra state, Victor Ezekwo said the agency has embarked on several water and sanitation projects to ensure that everyone has access to portable water and a clean toilet facility.

With a strong presence in Nigeria, UNICEF is a leading advocate for children that has the global authority to influence decision makers and partners at the grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality.
